A Muslim deli employee named Lassana Bathily, 24, originally from Mali in West Africa, bravely led terrified shoppers down into the basement walk-in freezer as the Islamist gunman Amedy Coulibaly stormed the Kosher supermarket and fired shots while keeping hostages upstairs.
The shoppers were able to stay safe in the freezing cold for 5 hours as well as contact their families and local authorities with their cell phones.
According to Daily Mail, Bathily escaped using a goods lift and was able to give the police valuable information about what was happening inside and where the hostages were hiding.
The shop was busy on a Friday as Jewish customers bought specialties for the Sabbath, which began at sunset that night. Bathily explained how the neighborhood has Muslims, Jews, and Christians, and they all go to the kosher grocery store.
He has been hailed a hero by the Jewish people he saved for thinking on his feet and being the brave man he was. Bathily was shy when interviewed, but did admit that many customers shook his hand and thanked him afterwards.
