Hero Cat Saves Baby From Freezing To Death In Russia

In Obninsk, Russia, a long-haired cat named Masha, showed a trait on Friday that most people don’t think cats have- compassion.

This cat acted selflessly when her mothering instincts kicked in and she noticed an abandoned baby boy left in a cardboard box in the 30 degree weather at the foot of the stairs where Masha usually sleeps. She kept him warm and meowed to get attention.

Local resident Irina Lavrova described the cat, a stray who is cared for by locals, as quiet and friendly, so when she heard the cat making a fuss, she knew something was wrong.

“I thought that perhaps she had injured herself,” said Lavrova, in Russian. “Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby.”

By the time paramedics responded to take the child to a hospital, Masha had grown protective of him and ran after the baby, trying to jump into the ambulance. Neighbors told the site Masha remained in the road for several hours afterward, apparently waiting for someone to bring the infant back, according to Huffington Post.

The 12-week-old baby had only been outside for a few hours and was dressed warmly, even with a little hat and a few diapers and baby food, so he was fortunately unhurt by the experience.

The baby has received an enormous amount of support, including donations of food and toys.

Masha has also been spoiled. With the entire block very proud of her, everyone’s given her her favorite treats, and extra love and attention.
