Major gym Planet Fitness is known for it’s “Judgement Free Zone” policy, rude and obnoxious Lunk alarm, very cheap monthly membership fees, and free monthly pizza and bagels (as well as an unlimited daily supply of Tootsie rolls on the front desk counter).
The gym has gotten on the news before for problems its “no judgement” rules have caused in the past.
This time, Planet Fitness cancelled a woman’s membership because she complained about seeing a transgender person in the woman’s locker room.
“I was stunned and shocked. He looked like a man. He did not look like a woman,” says Yvette Cormier, an ex-member at the Midland, MI location.
Cormier said she had no idea that the person who walked into the woman’s locker room while she was getting undressed was actually a transgender woman. She also said she had no idea Planet Fitness had a policy allowing transgender women to share locker rooms with women.
Cormier added that she understands some men self-identify as women and some women self-identify as men but says this person looked like a man and that caught her off guard.
Cormier says she immediately complained to the front desk and later corporate, but the gym said they embrace whatever sex a person identifies with, even if it’s not what they were biologically assigned.
So, they revoked her membership for violating Planet Fitness’s trademark “no judgement” policy. The “Judgement Free” gym that judges people that are “too strong” or have “too many muscles” (or any muscles at all) later released a statement saying they are “committed to creating a non-intimidating, welcoming environment for our members.”
Cormier told WNEM, “This is very unprofessional. It’s very scary.” Cormier says she doesn’t care to get her membership back, she only wants to warn other women at this gym to make them aware of this policy, because she says Planet Fitness failed to warn her.
Many people, including known member of the transgender community, Char Davenport, say that Planet Fitness should put their money where their mouth is and equip their gyms with private showers and changing rooms to stop these kind of problems from happening again.
