Attackers fired semiautomatic weapons at a child’s birthday party in Detroit’s west side, killing one person and wounding nine others, Detroit Police Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt told told WXYZ-TV.
A 20-year-old man, or 21-years old, according to conflicting reports, was killed in the Saturday night shooting and a 46-year-old man is in critical condition. Eight other people, including three women and five men, were also shot, yet Dolunt said it was a “miracle” no kids apparently were hurt.
The birthday party, which was held at a basketball court, had about 400 people who attended. The shooting occurred just before 9pm on Saturday night.
Police took one man into custody on a misdemeanor warrant but it’s unclear whether he was involved in the shooting. Police are looking for more suspects, although they are having trouble getting witnesses to cooperate.
Dolunt expressed his frustration during media interviews Saturday night.
“There’s kids out here. I’m livid. … There’s not any excuse why no one is talking,” he told WXYZ. “Man up or woman up, whatever, and tell us what’s going on.”
Detectives are trying to find the owner of an abandoned red car that was found crashed and abandoned in a parking lot across the basketball courts. They believe the people in the car could have been hit in the shooting.
